Basic Requirements on How to Grow Vanilla
Vanilla can be grown be grown in farms, around the house or in greenhouses.
The basic requirements of growing Vanilla are as follows;
- Temperature must be between 18 – 29 Degree Celsius;
- Humidity must be around 85%;
- The recommended vanilla cuttings must be around 50 cm long;
- The Soil pH must be around 6.6 – 7.5;
- Fill the pot or soil with bark, moss or surrounded by coconut husks;
- Prepare trees/stakes for the plant to climb because, it is a crawling plant;
- Water it daily with liquid fertilizer with high Nitrogen level. This reduces the Vanilla Shoot Blight Disease;
- It takes about 2-7 years to grow in order to bloom;
- Vanilla usually blooms when it is about 6-12 m long;
- It takes only one day to flower so watch carefully and hand-pollinate it, usually in the morning around 11 am. That means, only one flower on a vein will be ready for pollination each day and it takes 24 hours before the pollens fall off;
- The pods appear within two months of pollination;
- It takes around 6 – 9 months to mature;
- Pick the beans as soon as they turn yellow; and
- Process the bean using Quality Processing Techniques.
How to Grow Vanilla in Greenhouse
You can grow Vanilla inside a greenhouse.
The steps are similar to the above mentioned tips but the control of sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis and sufficient temperature is paramount.
You will have to provide support frames for the veins to grow around and the sufficient soil pH as specified above.
If you plant vanilla around or inside your house, it feels great to have Vanilla veins creeping around the house too.
